Happy Earth Day! Today the Marine Conservation Society launches its Big Give appeal to keep “forever chemicals” out of the ocean, forever.
Sewage discharged into our ocean contains a toxic soup of chemicals. Unlike human waste, some of these chemicals don’t break down they last forever, building up over time in wildlife, the ocean and our bodies. Forever chemicals, specifically PFAS, are threatening the health of our blue planet and the species which call the ocean home.
Chemical pollution makes marine wildlife more vulnerable to the effects of climate change, habitat loss and infectious disease. Forever chemicals can arrive in the sea through sewage pollution and landfill leachate. Species throughout the marine ecosystem are affected, and will be for generations. Marine restoration projects will be undermined by contaminants in the water surrounding them.
Help the Marine Conservation Society demand the changes that will stop forever chemicals ever reaching the sea. The Marine Conservation Society will collect evidence to show the extent of some forever chemicals in our seas and demand stronger regulation from the UK Government to ban their use working to stop them at source. It shouldn’t be up to consumers to find products that don’t contain toxic chemicals they shouldn’t be on sale.
Support the Marine Conservation Society‘s vital work by donating to their appeal here.
If you donate before 29th April, your generosity will have twice the impact as it will be doubled through match funding!
