I will be speaking at the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain’s Carbon Forum in Barcelona on 17 April, which brings together corporates, financial institutions, and policymakers to discuss the evolving role of carbon markets in corporate decarbonisation.
My keynote will focus on how carbon markets can move beyond offsetting to mobilise capital into real-economy investments, particularly in the blue economy. While carbon markets are scaling rapidly, their impact on investment decisions remains limited. The key challenge is to connect carbon revenues and corporate demand with scalable, investment-ready opportunities.
This is especially relevant in areas such as coastal resilience, nature-based solutions, and sustainable ocean economies, where financing gaps remain significant despite strong underlying potential.
The discussion comes at a timely moment, as regulatory frameworks evolve, including in Spain, creating new demand for carbon credits and opening opportunities to better align markets with real-economy outcomes.
The next phase of carbon markets will not be defined by the volume of credits alone, but by their ability to unlock capital into real assets, real economies, and real impact.
