Attending the 10th Our Ocean Conference in Busan

I’m looking forward to being in Busan, Korea, for the 10th Our Ocean Conference next week.

The conference has chosen the theme ‘Our Ocean, Our Action’ to promote global actions for a sustainable ocean. A special focus will be on Ocean Digital, combining ocean industry and digital technology and serving as an implementation tool to achieve a sustainable ocean swiftly and systematically.

I’ll be there to connect with blue-economy and blue-finance friends and colleagues. My mission is to highlight how financial institutions can have a major impact on ocean health, prosperity and biodiversity. Through their lending, underwriting and investment activities, as well as their client relationships, financial institutions can accelerate and mainstream the sustainable transition of ocean-linked businesses and industries.

Martin is a global ocean, climate and sustainability expert and futurist with 20+ years of experience. His recent roles include Director/Trustee at the Marine Conservation Society (the UK’s largest marine conservation charity), Sustainable Blue Economy consultant at the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), Senior Strategic Expert in Blue Economy at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Global Director of Impact at the international sustainability NGO Forum for the Future, Director/Trustee at the New Economics Foundation (a leading sustainable-development think tank), Head of The Economist Group’s World Ocean Initiative, and Practice Lead for Sustainability, Climate Change and Natural Resources at Economist Impact (part of The Economist Group).

A prolific global speaker, Martin has chaired the World Ocean Summit since 2019 and spoken at other major global ocean, climate and sustainability events such as the UN Ocean Conference, UN World Ocean Day, COP26/World Biodiversity Summit, Island Finance Forum, Virtual Island Summit, World Water Week, Blue Earth, edie, Climate Week NYC, London Climate Action Week, Economist Sustainability Week and the World Green Economy Summit. He has published widely on ocean and sustainability issues on Economist Group platforms and in other reputable outlets such as UN Today, BusinessGreen, the T20 compendium for India’s G20 presidency and the Ocean Yearbook.

Martin is known for accelerating the growth and impact of the World Ocean Initiative, helping to establish Economist Impact’s Sustainability Project (winner of a Webby Award for “Best Writing – Editorial”), serving as project director for the award-winning Food Sustainability Index, and giving a TEDx talk on “How a just & regenerative mindset can help us navigate the polycrisis”.
