Tomorrow I will moderate Economist Impact’s Sustainable Cities Talk, supported by Arcadis. I will be joined by 3 excellent panellists:
• John Batten, global cities director at Arcadis
• Eleni (Lenio) Myrivili, senior advisor on urban resilience and sustainability to the Mayor of Athens and chief heat officer
• Alis Daniela Torres, senior officer, Sustainable Resources, Climate and Resilience at ICLEI Europe.
According to data from the World Bank, cities are already home to 56% of the global population—and that percentage will continue to grow in the coming decades. The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that cities also contribute to 75% of global carbon emissions. Local and municipal governments and other local stakeholders play an important role in implementing measures to mitigate climate change and adapt to global heating, and also to put a circular economy into action.
In tomorrow’s discussion we will explore how cities are adapting to a net-zero future, how cities can effectively embrace a sustainable future and the steps being taken to make them more resilient to climate change.
